I had a list of several Lutheran churches I was going to visit before deciding which one to join but I never made it past First United Lutheran Church. Everyone is so friendly and kind (but not overwhelming). I immediately felt at home. Today I officially became a member and couldn't be happier with my decision.
First United Lutheran Church is an open and affirming congregation. The congregation provides music scholarships to music students from Southern Methodist University, University of Texas at Dallas or University of North Texas. The congregation boasts ownership of a marvelous hand built organ. The scholarship students provide beautiful music and augment the choir. The Music Director is an Associate in Ministry. In addition to the fine music program, the congregations pastor serves as associate Dean for the area as well as Dean of the Parish Lay Ministry Academy. Among the members of the congregation is the Bishop Emeritus of the NTNL Mission Area. In addition First United Lutheran is a Luther Memorial Church, honoring Martin Luther.
If you grew up in a traditional Lutheran Church you will feel right at home here. Small, loving, and forward-thinking.
They also have quilts hanging everywhere that they make and send out to those in need world wide.
My wife and I became members of First United a couple years ago, before we were married. I emailed my former pastor for suggestions for a church in Dallas. He replied back with a list, and we chose the one with the latest service. We've been attending First United ever since. The people here are kind and accepting. The service is typically traditional, with performances by SMU choir scholars, as well as pieces played on a beautiful old organ. After the service come the snacks and coffee, and there are various activities throughout the week. The neighborhood enjoys our yearly blessing of the pets, clothing exchange and German beer festival. It's a wonderful little church, filled with good people.
They recycle, have a Montessori school renting from them in the back, have yoga classes, and have a wonderful event hall.
This is a great little church. It is a very traditional service, but the people are not uptight or rigid.
