I need to make another trip here. There is lots of Dallas history as well. And best of all, it's free
Well I just went for Nelson Mandela and it was a great opportunity for me and learned more about him. Now that I know more about him it gave me the chance to explore more of how the history was to us I actually loved it. It was great it really give the inspirational to be welcome and enjoy of the man Nelson Mandela had done for us, thank you.
We will be going back to see the other exhibits, one on Freedman's cemetery and one on Sepia magazine.
First off, this is a great building, beautiful both inside and out, and the layout is effective for creating individual galleries each with their own experience.
One of my most favorite places in all of Dallas. Do yourself a favor and support this incredible place with your presence. They highlight incredible history and an art on a high level.
The museum had interesting pieces of African American history and art. However, when we went, there were limited exhibits. I kinda expected more. We spent less than an hour there. Note: there are other museums in the same area to visit.
I was expecting (hoping) that there would be at least one area offering a view of the history of African Americans in the Dallas area. As a new part-time resident, I'm trying to get a handle on the city's people, culture, and history. I almost docked the Museum one star for not providing this, but I guess it's not fair to penalize them for not doing something that they don't claim to do. Still, I wish there was someplace that looked intensively at African American history and culture in Dallas.
We visited for about two and half hours on a Saturday afternoon and still did not see everything. We spent a long time in the gallery of folk art on the first floor, which, although specifically about African American folk art in Texas, is one of the best collections of folk art I've seen anywhere: fascinating and beautiful pieces by inspired artists in a variety of media. We also explored the African American art gallery: pieces varied in quality but were always interesting and generally well-displayed. And the current exhibit of work by Jonas Boekhoudt ("Metropolis") which was engaging -- though sometimes glare from the overhead lights prevented us from seeing the canvases as wholes.
